What is File System?

Not going much deeper to keep it as simple as possible. File system defines how data is stored in storage media (hard drives, SD cards, pen drives).

Any file system requires operating system and support like in the form of driver or application to operate and run

File system has two components

  • Files
  • Metadata

Files:

These are actual files you store in your storage drive

Metadata:

Meta data is information about the files.

File tables are very important in any file system. They contain information about files, free space in hard drive, ownership details and their permissions, creation, modified dates, access information for users, quotas (if you want some users to get 1GB and other group of users 2GB you can configure that in quota section) and much more information is stored in here.

There will also be special files for example dev directory in Linux. It won’t have files but pointers to specific pieces of hardware for operation of OS.

File system should be able to differentiate between files folders.

These are some of the things that wraps up every basic you require to understand about file system. In our next tutorial or article lets discuss about FAT file system.
